In order to ensure the safety of our vendors and attendees, the 57th Annual Gem, Mineral, & Fossil Show has been postponed until 2021. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The Geology Section of the Peoria Academy of Science is dedicated to the study of all fields of the Earth Sciences, including geology, mineralogy, paleontology, conchology, and the lapidary arts. Educational programs relating to aspects of the earth sciences are presented at the monthly meetings, and members participate in field trips to collect minerals and fossils as well as hold workshops to conduct in-depth studies of specific topics.

In addition to member activities, the club operates outreach programs to improve geology education by hosting an annual rock, mineral, gem, and fossil show and by supporting geology education in area classrooms.

In addition to being part of the Peoria Academy of Science, the geology section is affiliated with the American Federation of Mineralology Societies, the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies, and the Geodeland Earth Science Clubs.

Regular Club Meetings
Regular club meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month (excluding September and December) at Forest Park Nature Center in Peoria Heights. Meetings begin with social time and light snacks, followed by an hour-long program beginning around 7:00p, a short business meeting, and several door prize raffles.

Mineralogy Study Group
While the main group is more business-focused, a smaller group also meets monthly in order to further members' knowledge of rocks and minerals. The smaller group dynamic allows members to engage in greater conversation and for more hands-on workshops to take place.

Recent presentations for the mineralogy study group have included 'Rocks from Fire,' 'FAKES!,' and 'A Hike for Herkimers.'

Recent workshops have included fossil restoration, fossil molding, and fossil casting. To find out more about the Mineralogy Study Group, you must first attend a regular club meeting.

Lapidary Workshop
The Geology Section hosts a weekly lapidary workshop at the Miller Center in Pekin, IL. For a fee of less than $5, anyone can learn to use the club's equipment to cut and polish a stone! The shop is open on non-holiday Thursdays from 6p-9p. Please arrive on-time to reserve a station and please stay until the end to help clean up. Note: The workshop currently has a limited capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gem, Mineral, & Fossil Show
The Geology Section is perhaps best known for its long-running Gem, Mineral, & Fossil Show, which celebrated its 56th year in 2019. The annual show is an opportunity for the Greater Peoria area to visit with dealers and demonstrators related to rocks, minerals, gems, and fossils. The show also provides games for children and hands-on learning activities for all ages. The show is traditionally hosted on the 4th Saturday and Sunday in August at EastSide Centre in East Peoria. Note: This year's show has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Educational Outreach
We support earth science in a number of ways, including by sharing educational resources, leading hands-on earth science activities, and offering grant funds to schools in need.
